Raising $100,000 to fight cancer. That’s the goal of today’s Relay for Life Kings Mountain at Kings Mountain YMCA’s walking track.
The 15th annual Relay will begin at 5 p.m. and conclude at midnight with a fireworks show.
Many events are annual favorites, such as the tricycle race.
“Adult team members get on a tricycle and race across the front of the track,” said Frank Burns, co-chairman of the event. “The top of the handlebars cannot be any taller than 24 inches.”
This makes for a fun sight, Burns said. He also said there is an ongoing rivalry between teams for the race.
The event will also feature multiple dance groups, with performances by Dance Magic, Overthrown Dance and Step-n-Out Dance Productions. A group of Zumba dancers will also be performing, as well as the Kings Mountain High School chorus, known as Kings Revue.
Harvest, a gospel group, will perform at 8 p.m., and after the lighting of the luminaries at 9 p.m., the Womanless Beauty Pageant returns this year at 11 p.m.
Not only will there be entertainment, the Relay for Life teams will also offer items for sale.
“Right now, we’ve got about 22 teams registered to have a campsite there,” Burns said. “Some will be selling hot dogs, cotton candy, fried pickles. So there’s several different teams doing different things.”
The fundraising goal is a bit higher than usual this year.
“We usually set a goal that’s about $75,000. We’ve been real close every time,” Burns said. “We just decided to go all out this year.”
