Emergency crews were investigating after a person was found dead on Interstate 85 early Friday morning in north Charlotte.
Officials said someone called 911 around 4:40 a.m. saying they spotted a body under the Sugar Creek Road bridge.
Firefighters responded and found a person deceased. Investigators said that the person likely jumped from the bridge and was hit by a car.
Paramedics said the person was hit by multiple vehicles and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have taped off the Sugar Creek bridge and were treating it as a crime scene as officers were gathering evidence.
Crews had to close the northbound lanes of I-85 and divert traffic onto the Sugar Creek ramp and traffic was backed up for miles.
Police do not expect the interstate to be reopened for hours, and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
