A Lincoln County woman was one of three people killed in a chain-reaction wreck on Sunday along I-77 in Fancy Gap, Va.
Kathern Worley, 71, of Iron Station was a passenger in a car that struck a tractor-trailer. She died at the scene, Virginia State Police said.
Ninety five vehicles were involved in 17 separate wrecks within a mile span near the base of Fancy Gap Mountain, police said. The incident happened around 1:15 p.m. in an area enveloped in heavy fog.
Worley’s body was taken to the Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for examination. It was ready Tuesday to be released to her family, said Tracie Cooper, an administrator at the office.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.
William M. Sosebee of Allen, Ky., and Andrew Katbi of Delphos, Ohio, also died in the crashes. Police say Sosebee and Worley were passengers in different cars that struck the same tractor-trailer. Katbi was driving another vehicle that rear-ended a tractor-trailer.
Police say 25 people were injured in the wrecks.
Virginia State Police in Galax are investigating. Spokeswoman Corrine Geller said message boards over the interstate warned drivers to slow down because of severe fog on Sunday.
