Ashbrook High congratulates regional science and engineering fair winners

Ashbrook High School recently recognized winners in the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair, the Region 6A Science Fair in Salisbury and those who competed in the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair on Feb. 12.
Winners include:

Mary Yavelak for “The Safest Combination of Fabric and Treatment Method for Cloth Diapers in Order to Minimize Microbial Exposure in House-hold Environments,” winning the overall high school award at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; N.C. Biotechnology Award, Positive Impact Award, Project of Distinction at Region 6A. She went on to compete in the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Adina Girmay and Angelica Mejia for “Cleaning Up Oil Spills Safely and Effectively,” winning first place in high school earth science at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; Gold Medal Award and Stockholm Water Prize at Region 6A; and went on to compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Jenna Huffstetler for “The Effects of Artificial Sweeteners vs. Natural Sugar in Sugar Cookies,” winning first place for high school physical science at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; Gold Medal Award and Project of Distinction at Region 6A; and went on to compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Meagan Mallonee for “The Effectiveness of Insecticidal Soap Compared to or Combined With Lady Beetles in the Elimination of Aphids,” winning first place in high school life sciences at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair Garrett Heath for “The Effect of Salinity Concentrations on the Growth of Asexual Dinoflagellates, Specifically Amphidinium carteri,” winning second place in high school life science at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; Gold Medal Award, Stockholm Water Prize and Project of Distinction at Region 6A; and went on to compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Pooja Deva for “An Optimal Shoe for Haiti,” winning first place for high school technology and engineering at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; Gold Medal Award, Positive Impact Award and Project of Distinction at Region 6A; and went on to compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Daniel Nelli for “An Attempt at Artificial Gravity,” winning second place for high school technology and engineering at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair; Gold Medal Award at Region 6A; and went on to compete at the N.C. Science and Engineering Fair.

Jake Kennington for “Cool Cast,” winning third place for high school technology and engineering at the Gaston Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
