Girl Scout organizes art gallery

Cerys Webber never thought her idea would be so popular. Two months ago, Cerys (pronounced CARE-iss) hoped 25 students would submit art for a competition and gallery at Arts on Main in Gastonia. Now more than 100 kids have put pen, pencil, marker and paintbrush to paper.

The art is on exhibit in the 14-year-old's contest, “What a Girl Dreams Of.” Two boys entered artwork. And that’s fine with Cerys. She thinks it’s cool.

She did the project to earn a silver award through Girl Scouts. Her chapter meets in Dallas. To drum up interest, she contacted art teachers at local private and public schools to see about students creating artwork for the project. She didn’t restrict the creations to a certain medium. The idea is to let creativity run wild.

“It could be what they dream of or their dream in life,” she said. Some painted mythical creatures. There are a few unicorns and a dragon surrounding a castle. Others depicted themselves as the president of the United States or at the top of a future vocation.

For the past week, art entries arrived at Arts on Main. Three local artists judged the work on Saturday night.

Cerys didn’t expect the gallery to generate so much interest.

“This is amazing,” she said, taping a drawing to a wall. “It was more than I could ever ask for.”
