PSNC Energy employees teamed up with students from Lowell Elementary School to win first place in the “Are You Smarter than a Gaston County Fifth-Grader” competition.

The fundraiser benefiting the Gaston County Education Foundation brought together 12 corporate teams partnered with local fifth-graders. Students coached adults in a quest to determine who’s the most quiz savvy.

The competition, held Thursday evening at Stuart W. Cramer High School, grossed $28,000, said Gaston County Education Foundation Executive Director Jennie Stultz.

The PSNC Energy team won the event by correctly answering this question: “How many senators are there in the North Carolina Legislature?”

The team gave the correct answer, 50 senators, to win the grand prize.

Coming in second place this year is the team from Beam Construction, partnered with fifth-grader coaches from W.  Blaine Beam Intermediate School.

The Pharr Yarns team with McAdenville Elementary placed third. The winning teams received trophies, Stultz said.

“I think everybody had a great time, most especially for the students. They get a big kick out of being stars for the night,” she said.

The Gastonia Grizzlies and GSM team, partnering with Pleasant Ridge Elementary, won a spirit award. It recognizes good sportsmanship, showing support for other teams, and having the most team spirit, Stultz said.

The Choice USA/Sun Drop team, partnering with New Hope Elementary, won a theme award in recognition of good sportsmanship and coordination of costumes to wear at the event.
