Two men driving four-wheelers led an officer on a chase through the icy roads of Shelby early Wednesday, according to police. One driver was caught and charged, while the other escaped, Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford said.

Robert James Jones, 34, of Shelby, and another man were driving four-wheelers on icy roadways about midnight Wednesday, according to a Shelby Police report.

An officer responded to several calls about the men riding near Gold and Warren streets without tail lights on their off-road vehicles, officer B.T. Spangler wrote in the report.

When the four-wheeler drivers saw police, they attempted to ride away, Spangler wrote, but at one point the vehicles started driving toward his police car.

Spangler wrote that he turned on his blue lights and tried to stop his vehicle in order to stop the two four-wheelers. Due to the ice on the road, the police car slid toward the center of the road, according to the report.

One four-wheeler drove by the stopped police car and the second drove forward, crashing into the left front corner of the police car, Spangler wrote in the report.

Officer Spangler wrote that he ran after the four-wheeler drivers and shouted for the two men to stop.

The officer started chasing the second four-wheeler, driven by Jones, while the first four-wheeler motioned for his fellow driver to follow, according to the report.

Jones fell off his four-wheeler and was caught by police, according to the report. He complained that his left leg hurt and his knee was swollen, Spangler wrote in the report, also saying he previously had blood clots in his leg.

Jones was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and then arrested on charges of resisting arrest, driving without registering the vehicle and a rear-lamp violation. He was jailed on a $7,500 secured bond.
