County authorities say they hope DNA and fingerprint samples found at Smoker’s Etc. will lead to an arrest in the June 20 fatal shooting of a store clerk.

James Scott Davis, 43, of Dallas was killed after being shot in what Sheriff Alan Norman said was an apparent armed robbery at the store located between Kings Mountain and Shelby.

Investigators found a black Ford Thunderbird with tinted windows that may be connected to the killing, Capt. Joel Shores said.

“We have submitted some evidence to a forensic lab that specializes in DNA and fingerprints,” Shores said.

Investigators sent the evidence to a South Carolina lab because the North Carolina state lab is backed up 18 months, Shores said.

A $2,500 reward is still being offered for information that helps lead to an arrest in the killing.

Anyone with information on the shooting is urged to call the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office at 704-484-4822 or Crime Stoppers at 704-481-8477.
