Truck fire stalls traffic Tuesday

Ron Froneberger of Dallas was driving a box truck from Gastonia to Charlotte Tuesday morning when he noticed some smoke ahead on I-485 near the Charlotte Douglas Airport, he said.

As he approached around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday he could see a dump truck on fire. He said he used the fire extinguisher from his truck in an attempt to help the dump truck driver put out the blaze.

The fire appeared to go out, and then blazed again. The incident brought out about eight fire trucks and backed up traffic in both directions for more than two miles, Froneberger said.

The dump truck driver said he heard a popping sound just before the blaze began. No one was hurt in the incident.
